Week of 4/29/19 - 5/3/19

Hubbard Street Share:  Our kids had their final share for our Hubbard Street Dance partnership on Thursday and it was so special!  Each group choreographed their own little piece and chose music to accompany it.  They were brave, confident, and expressive.  As a class, they also learned a very brief piece. I'm so proud of them!  Check out their videos to our photo album.  Ask your kids about the share- what did it feel like to perform?  Whose pieces did they enjoy from other classes?

Reading:  Our pre-Revolutionary War research culminated in a debate between the (303) Patriots and the (303) Loyalists today!  The kids spent about a week and a half preparing their arguments using primary source documents as their evidence.  They refined them, rehearsed, and had a fantastic experience re-enacting history today.  They were eloquent, confident, and frankly, adorable! Check out tons of photos in our album.

Writing:  We are researching the actual Revolutionary War.  Kids will write three sections of a blog that they'll create through Google Sites:  an "all about the war" section, a historical fiction narrative, and an "all about... (a specific event of the War)" section.  More to come.

Social Studies:  We kicked off our Economics unit this week!  Our entrepreneurs met in the auditorium to watch a clip from the show Shark Tank in preparation for learning about how to grow a business.  Today we learned about businesses, consumers, wants, and needs.  Talk to your kids about how you as a family make spending decisions (what stores you shop at, how you decide to spend money, etc).  Also, if you happen to have extra craft supplies, extra cardboard jewelry boxes, toilet paper rolls, or other craft-y type things laying around, send 'em in!  Sometimes kids use them as packaging for their products, or even for the products themselves.

Math: This week we practiced adding and subtracting fractions that are greater than 1 whole, requiring us to "borrow" when we subtracted.  For example:  (1 and 2/5) - (4/5).  The kids learned how to show their work on a number line and using number bonds.  Ask your kids to show you how a problem like this can be demonstrated on a number line.

Science:  Your kids are enjoying a unit with Mr. Lukehart, studying life science.  Ask them about what they're up to!

Miscellaneous:
  • The kids earned "Pajama Day" through our Scrabble Board.  Their positive behavior included showing responsibility with our classroom materials, showing respect and awesome effort during group work, walking quietly in the halls, and being helpful and peaceful with a sub.  We had lots of fun doing our debate in our pj's.
  • Not much time in the year, but there's still plenty of opportunity to be Mystery Reader!  If you can't come in, send us a video of yourself reading, or invite another family member or friend.  You can reach out to me about another time if our typical slot doesn't work for you.  Be sure to sign up for Mystery Reader
