Week of 3/18/19 - 3/22/19

We finished IAR testing Monday, enjoyed Hubbard Street on Thursday, and an assembly about reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Today we welcomed a great mystery reader, an extra recess earned from a class reward, and book buddies.  A great way to end our week!

Reading: Research partners chose topics to research from a list of events leading up to the Revolutionary War.  We practiced a fun variety of ways to take notes this week, including drawings, maps, charts, timelines, and sentence prompts.  The kids LOVED it.  We'll dig into research after break.  Talk to your kids about what they've learned about pre-Revolutionary War so far.  Talk to them  about their notes- what graphics did they use to organize their information?

Social Studies:  The kids have been working in their groups to develop presentations about their regions.  They're doing a great job working collaboratively and pulling information from a variety of sources.  Group work is not easy but through a lot of coaching, they're compromising, dividing up work, and giving feedback.  I'm proud of them.  Ask your kids what region their doing, and what topic they're reporting on within their presentation.

Math:  We used benchmark fractions (0, 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, etc) to compare fractions.  We used number lines and tape-diagrams to visually explain the comparison, as well as words.  For example, 4/9 is less than 3/5 (even though 4 is bigger than 3 and 9 is bigger than 5)... because 4/9 is less than half and 3/5 is more than half.   Ask your kids to compare fractions like this and explain it in words or pictures.  Use cooking or measurement to connect with real life!

Science:  Your kids are enjoying a new unit with Mr. Lukehart, studying life science.  Ask them about what they're up to!

Miscellaneous:
  •  If you have photos of your family on vacation anywhere in the US, please email them to me or send them in!  I am starting a wall of photographs of regions we've visited.
