Week of 4/1/19 - 4/5/19

Reading: We read a picture book titled Beatrice's Goat this week. We used "chat stations" to get us talking about various aspects of the book, like character relationships, the author's message, and the techniques the author uses to craft a beautiful story.  It was fantastic work by your kids. We also continued our research on the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.  Ask your kids about Beatrice and her goat.  Where did is the story set?  Can your child summarize the big events?  What was the author's message?

Social Studies:  Next week your kids will present their regions research to their classmates in the form of an iMovie or a Google Slides presentation.  They did a nice job collaborating all the way to the end.  I'll look forward to their presentations, not only to celebrate their work, but to see their presentation skills continue to grow from their biography presentations.  Ask your kids what region their doing, and what topic they're reporting on within their presentation.

Science Alliance:  week Dr. Kupperman visited us again this week through Oak Park Ed Foundation's Science Alliance program.  He taught us about Galileo and his discoveries about principles of gravity.  The kids did experiments just like Galileo (with the addition of the slow-mo feature on the iPad...) and had a blast, as always. Ask them about it!

Math: We used number lines, area models, and multiplication create equivalent fractions and to compare them. We also started adding and subtracting fractions, including those that are in the form of an improper fraction or a mixed number. Ask your kids to add and subtract fractions with different denominators (2/3 + 3/4) They should convert the two fractions into similar units first, by finding equivalent fractions for each.

Science:  Your kids are enjoying a new unit with Mr. Lukehart, studying life science.  Ask them about what they're up to!

Miscellaneous:
  • For the month of April, Whittier Student Council will help Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry fight hunger in a friendly competition with other Oak Park schools to see who can earn the most points (earned through donated food, dollars, and volunteer hours.). You can support Team Whittier by contributing online here, bringing canned goods to school, and volunteering at the food pantry (just make sure to tell them you're from Whittier School!
