Naper Settlement: We had a ton of fun on our Naper Settlement field trip on Thursday! The weather held out for us, the kids were respectful, positive, and interactive, and the day was full of fun, interactive activities. Ask your kids about their favorite part of the day. Ask if they would have liked to live during the 1800's and why. Ask what skills they would have had to know and do. Ask them to "create their manners" (which means bow or curtsey).
Reading: We spent this preparing to start our American Revolution research unit. It's a fantastic reading/ writing unit full of interesting information and fun writing. We watched some videos, did some reading, and took a pre-assessment in preparation. Next week we'll begin to research events in 1775 that led to the war. Biography projects are due Monday! Your child should come to school with his/ her graphic organizer, biography paper, and two creative assignments. S/he should have prepared their little presentation either using notecards, an outline on paper, or by rehearsing at home.

Math: We learned how to make equivalent fractions this week (3/4 = 6/8) first by showing an area model, and then by using multiplication. The area model scaffolded the concept of the size of the pieces getting smaller, but the number of pieces increasing. Ask your kids to show you how to use a rectangular area model to show that 1/3 is equivalent to 2/6, 3/9, or 4/12.
Social Studies: Next wee we'll continue researching different regions of the United States. They are using Hyperdocs that I created to guide them through the research process, full of links to maps, videos, texts, photos, and other resources. They'll synthesize their information and create either an iMovie or a Google Slides presentation to share what they learned. If you have photos of your family on vacation anywhere in the US, please email them to me or send them in! I am starting a wall of photographs of regions we've visited.

- The Whittier Student Council needs your help in the fight against blood cancers! By participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth programs, our school is working with LLS to help blood cancer patients live their best life today. Between February 19-March 15th, students and families are asked to save any type of change (coins and bills) using the collection boxes that were brought home. Checks can also be turned in using the collection boxes, payable to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The collection boxes should be returned to school by Friday, March 15, 2019. In addition, parents, friends, and family members can also donate online using the teacher links at https://events.lls.org/
pages/il/Whittier-Elementary- School-2019 . After you donate online, you’ll receive a tax-deductible receipt. There are many prize opportunities online that are not available if you bring in the money.
Overall, the class that raises the most money both online and in school combined will receive an Olive Garden lunch including pasta, salad, and breadsticks at a future date determined by their classroom teacher. Plus, if Whittier School meets our goal of $2,019 we will have a fun celebration at school.
