Week of 10.24.11 - 10.28.11

Halloween is upon us!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend filled with fall activities both spoooooooky and fun.  Monday's Halloween parade will start at 12:30, with the classroom party to follow.  Students can change into costumes at lunch, either here at school or at home.

Reading:  We are wrapping up our first Treasures unit, "Making a Difference."  We've had some great discussions about different ways in which people can make a difference in the world:  actions that affect many people or just one person, leadership that physically help others versus ways that inspire from a difference.  Our next unit's theme is "Taking a Stand."  The big idea is that 'sometimes conditions or situations in life force people to take action.'  We'll be working on making inferences, main idea and details, and drawing conclusions.

4th Grade Math:  We are almost through Unit 3.  Thus far we've worked on building multiplication facts, measuring distance using map scale, and solving number stories.  Next week we'll continue with number stories and learn how adding parentheses to number sentences can change the answer.  Their test will be Tuesday, November 8th.  See below for examples on number sentences with parentheses.
  • (6*5)+2= 32...
  • whereas
  • 6* (5+2) =43

Science:  The kids discovered that while all iron can be a 'magnet detector,' some iron detects better than others.  This week they hid magnets inside of a box, then used the iron materials to find the magnets.  We discussed how the size of the material and the force they felt while detecting could affect their hypothesis.  I also showed them "Dapper Dan," a toy from my parents' era that used iron filings and a magnetic stick to allow children to decorate Dapper Dan's hairstyle and beard.  Remember those??  Next week we'll start experimenting with circuits!  Ask your kids about the STRONG magnets they got to see this week.

Writing:  We continued our whole-class assignment related to the book The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups.  This week, the kids finished drafting their 'grown up rule' and the 'real reason' that parents create the rules.  We revised their work, focusing on voice, structure and word choice.  I introduced some new tech skills:  inserting a text box and spell check.  Next week they'll illustrate their published pieces.

Miscellaneous:
  • Please start sending in clear two-liter bottles, we need 130 of them!  We will use them as terrariums and aquariums for our next science unit.  They need to be clear (not tinted or green), rinsed out, and label-free please.  Thank you!
