Week of 10.17.11 - 10.21.11

It was nice to connect with so many of you at conferences!  I'm looking forward to continuing our year of collaboration to provide exciting and enriching opportunities for our students.  Also, thank you for all of the well wishes regarding my wedding.  It was a wonderful weekend celebrated with family and friends, enhanced by the excitement and anticipation of my students.

4th Grade Math:  We've begun Unit 3, Multiplication and Division; Number Sentences and Algebra.  In this unit we'll really concentrate on building speed and accuracy of math facts.  We'll also work on understanding the way a number sentence functions and the way it can be rewritten to work in a different way.  For example, we'll practice [ 5 * 4 = ___], then we'll also work with [ 5 * ___ = 20 ].  Please continue to work with your child on manipulating and rearranging numbers to build number sense.  Examples are below:
  • 4*4 offers the same answer as 4*2*2
  • 25*2 offers the same answer as 'doubling 25'
  • 73-40 can be solved by "counting down" [73 down 3=70], then [70 down 30 =40].  Together, 3 and 30 provide your answer of 33
  • 4 groups of 3 can also be shown as 2 groups of 6 (this is a concept we'll study in Unit 3)

Science:  We continued studying the properties of magnets this week, discovering that magnets can stick to other magnets through materials.  This is dependent on the thickness of the material and the strength of the magnet.  We also discovered that iron can become a temporary magnet when attached to a magnet.  Ask your kids to demonstrate how a paperclip can become a temporary magnet when attached to another magnet!
Writing:  We've started an exciting new whole-class assignment related to the book The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups.  During this short assignment, the kids will use a 'grown up rule' like brush your teeth! or make your bed! and they'll write the 'real reason' that parents create these rules.  We'll discuss how to develop a topic, use a strong opener, include transitions etc.  Our focus will be on developing a detailed narrative to explain how/ why the grown-up rule came to be.

  • If you haven't already done so, please send in your 5th grader's Camp Edwards permission slip and money.  If you're in need of a partial scholarship, you may contact our office for more information.
