Reading: This unit's theme is called "Taking a Stand." The big idea is that 'sometimes conditions or situations in life force people to take action.' Through our first story we reviewed literary devices like metaphors, similes and hyperboles. We clarified what a statement, question, command and exclamation is. Using the story we discussed characters and setting, and learned how they can each offer clues about the other.
4th Grade Math: This week we completed Unit 3: Multiplication and Division, Number Sentences and Algebra. We will review the concepts on Monday and the students' test will be Tuesday, November 8th. While the 5th graders and I are away at camp next Wednesday and Thursday, the 4th graders will work through "Time" packets. This work will focus on telling time, elapsed time, and solving word problems related to time; it's a concept many students still need practice with! As you go through your day, include your child in telling time. Examples include:
- Offer 'stories' like: It is 4:30 now, if we eat dinner in two hours, what time will that be?
- The pasta will boil for 9 minutes, it's 5:54. What time will it be when it's ready?
- Dad goes to work for 8 hours a day, and he commutes another hour. He leaves the house at 7:30 am. What time does he return?

Science: We've moved on from magnets and begun electricity! Our scientists discovered how to light a bulb using a D-cell, two wires and a bulb. They also figured out how to light the bulb with only one wire, and by adding a switch. I introduced the concept of 'circuits,' discussing electricity sources, receivers and pathways. Ask your kids about how they got their bulb to light!
Writing: This week the kids typed their "Grown Up Rules." They're so funny! As they drafted, they experimented with the new tech skills: using text boxes, changing font size and style, and spell check. Ask them what grown up rule they created, and what the 'official reason' is and 'the truth.'
