Week of 4/4 - 4/8

Dear Parents,

Our students did a great job with their first PARCC test.  Everyone worked well on the computer and it went smoothly.  Our schedule for the rest of our PARCC tests is below just in case you would like to see it.

Students received a field trip form today for our next field trip, NaperSettlement in Naperville.  We will be going on Thursday, April 21. We walk around together and listen to the different "teachers" about their profession. Let's hope for good weather as most of it is outdoors! The cost of the field trip is $7 for students and everyone will need to bring a bag lunch.  Parents are welcome to join us but need to pay $8.50 for admission.  Please let me know (marking it off on the permission slip) if you would like to join us for the day.  If you plan to join us on our field trip, you will need to go to the enclosed web link to schedule a background check.  There are no walk ins. day.

Congratulations to Alix and Gabby who were the winners of our class spelling bee on Friday. They will both get to participate in the school spelling bee on Friday, April 29th. Congratulations to Maggie as well as she will be the alternate for our class. Overall, the students did a great job in our class competition. It was very competitive and therefore not an easy thing to win! We look forward to being good classmates and cheering on our classroom representatives in the school spelling bee.

Have a good week-end,
Leslie and David

Reading: This week we started reading Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. This novel is about an eleven year old girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy and has many challenges in her life. Her biggest challenge is that she cannot verbally communicate with loved ones and, as you might expect, it is the source of a lot of frustration for her. She is a very bright child, however, not many people see it, or realize it. We made predictions on what we think Melody will do about her situation. We also discussed ways to describe the characters that we have read about at the beginning of the book. Ask your child to share one of Melody's character traits with you.

Centers: This week we continued practicing our typing skills, made our own analogies that compared antonyms and synonyms, read a poem by Emily Dickinson for National Poetry Month, and wrote an opinion piece on the topic of "Should schools have more P.E. time?" With opinion pieces, we talked about how we write whether we agree or disagree with a topic and then explain why we agree or disagree. Students came up with some very thoughtful responses! Ask your child to share his or her opinion on school P.E. time with you.

Writing:  This week we continued to work on our mini-research projects that had been put on hold before the break. Students have picked fun and interesting topics for what they would like to learn about and do research on. This project is a great way for students to have fun learning about something that they are very interested in. We will finish our research and start working on our presentations next week. Ask your child to share their choice for a topic with you.

Math: I was so proud of everyone on their fractions math test!  Everyone did a great job.  This week we did some preparation for the PARCC test.  There are a few topics that are on the PARCC tests that we haven't covered so we worked a angles, decimals, and then had the test.  We will continue taking the PARCC next week and then will start our decimals unit. Ask your child the difference between an acute and obtuse angle.

Social Studies:  This week we continued to work on our google slideshow.  Mrs. Spring came to our class to help us with our presentations and everyone is working together to add their information.  The slideshows will be finished next week!  Ask your child how their slide show is going and which slides they are responsible for in the project.

Science:  Our class is studying with Mr. Lukehart for science.  Ask them what they did this week.
