Week of 4/25/16 - 4/29/16

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Mrs. Roskos!

Our Spring Sing is next Thursday, May 5th.  Our class need to arrive at 6:45 p.m. and will meet Mrs. Weiss in our classroom.  The performance begins at 7:00 p.m.  We look forward to seeing everyone there!

In support of the Can Do Food Drive, Whittier collected over 600 items and $1,010.00.  This will help the OPRF Food Pantry toward their goal of collecting 100,000 items and dollars in order to receive an additional $25,000 from Challenge Corp.  Many thanks for the support from our Whittier community.

Reading: We continued reading Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper.  We met more characters who found it uncomfortable to interact with Melody and her classmates because they were unsure of how to do so and talked about how this realistic fiction novel mimics real life.  Students are appalled by the behavior of some of the characters!  We also related these interactions with our own through the Young Athletes program.  Our students have taken turns assisting Mr. Tim with his adapted PE class this year and have met some new friends with varying disabilities; they liked making these connections.  Next week we'll continue to read and discuss character development and theme.   Ask your kids about the Young Athletes program and who they've helped during adapted PE.

Writing:  We're starting opinion writing!  Today I explained the difference between opinion ("I think", persuasive ("I think and you should, too"), and argument ("I think and you should, too, and here's how I disprove/ disagree with your argument).  Ask your child what season they prefer and ask them for reasons AND examples!  "It's fun and cool" are the reasons ... make them give you examples, too :)

Math: This week we continued our decimals unit.  We learned how to write the expanded form for both fractions and decimals.  We used place value charts and the hundreds grids to help us.  Those materials also helped us when we started to compare decimals.  Today we were able to compare decimals by using the <, >, = signs.  Next week we will take a midterm test and then will continue on in our decimal unit.  Ask your child if they can solve this problem:  .05 is <, >, or = to .75

Social Studies: The students did a wonderful job on their Midwest google presentations and they shared them with the class this week.  We have begun our last region project for the year!  Our students are now going to research the West or Southwest Region with their group.  They will become experts on the region and teach the rest of the class.  Since half the class will be studying a different region, the presentation will be a teaching presentation.  Ask your child if they are researching the West or Southwest region and who they are working with.

Science:  Our class is studying Ecosystems with Mr. Lukehart this trimester.  Ask them what they did this week.
