Reading: We continued our read-aloud novel this week titled Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. It is an adventurous narrative about a 12 year old boy who participates in the new town library's invitation-only lock-in. In order to get out, he must play his cards right in Mr. Lemoncello's most recent board game. This read-aloud has already been a fun way to close out reading this year! We also read The Giving Tree and the kids submitted a response about the theme. I was really impressed with their answers. For a special treat, ask your kids to read The Giving Tree (on their iPads) with you and discuss what they think the theme is.
Writing: We have begun one final writing cycle for this year and our kiddos picked some really fun topics. Their writing challenge from me was to choose "something" new that they haven't done this year: a new point of view, a new genre, a new type of character, a new writing technique like personification. Ask your child about what they chose to write as their final published piece this year.
Roots: We wrapped up roots with one final assessment. They did great! I'm pleased with the progress they made this year in learning how to use the prefixes and roots to break down a word.
4th Grade Math: This week we finish our geometry unit on Monday by doing our study guide. We also watched their favorite math video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpkjb4Tx844 and took our test on Tuesday. Many of our students did not finish the test Tuesday so we completed it on Wednesday and practiced our angles with a very fun game. http://www.mathplayground.com/alienangles.html I wish I had taken pictures of them while playing this game. They were so excited! On Thursday we began our last unit, U.S. Customary Measurements. We will be briefly covering 4 lessons in this unit so we will not be having a final test. Ask your child if they enjoyed alien angles and how many angles they successfully measured!
Growth/Fixed Mindset: We hope you enjoyed the movies! Here is the link in case you didn't watch them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RAud0-kj6c&feature=em-upload_owner
Social Studies: Everyone uploaded their Book Creators to our Showbie app this morning. I'm very excited to see their finished project. We have worked on this for a long time! This week we also went back into our Social Studies book and learned a little bit about the government and the constitution. We will be reading two chapter in our book to finish out our year (one about the U.S. Government and one about Illinois' Government). Our final social studies test will be an open note test on a google document.
Science: This trimester, our scientists are studying with Mr. Lukehart. They'll be learning about Ecosystems throughout an exciting unit during which they'll develop experiments using mealworms and build a live terrarium and aquarium! Ask your kids about what they planted, grew, or added to their ecosystem.
