What an incredible year this has been! This particular class of students has come together in such a unique and special way. They are kind, caring, funny, creative, hard-working and thoughtful. They've molded into a family of learners that support one another, challenge one another, and inspire one another. I've had a wonderful time teaching them this year, and have learned quite a bit from them along the way! Thanks for all of your support, too. We can't make the growth and progress here at Whittier without the incredible support from home!
Below
I've listed a few tips to keep your kids academically active for the
next few months. Enjoy your summers. May they be filled with equal
parts adventure and relaxation!
Math:
Keep your kids thinking mathematically this summer through your
everyday activities: ask them to help with baking or cooking to
practice using and converting fractions. Invite them to help you plan a
day trip or a vacation where they can use a budget, calculate miles, or plan a schedule. Play board games like Monopoly or card games like Top-It (war, but with addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc). Check out the math sites on our blog to the left of this post, too.
Reading: Research
has shown that kids' reading levels can drop significantly if they
don't read throughout the summer. Please encourage your child to visit
the public library (their reading program is fantastic!) so that they
may find exciting, suitable books to keep them interested. Twenty
minutes of reading a day, even 4 days a week, will ensure your child
doesn't fall back, and will probably even help them continue to grow! Click here to visit our class page for two fantastic lists of book recommendations for readers of all levels. Also, check out the reading links on our blog to the left of this post.
