Week of 2.21 - 2.25

We had quite an unusual four days, but the kids managed to rock their week anyway!  Tuesday we had an assembly by Lynn Allen at the Multicultural Center about Black History Month.  I was out sick half of Wednesday and all of Thursday, but they were wonderful for the sub (who was also wonderful).  We had our Hubbard Street final share this morning.  Our class danced with energy and confidence.  Our spokespeople, Aidan and Hope, represented us beautifully and fielded some tough questions!

Next week, ISAT testing begins.  If you haven't already done so, please send back the yellow/ brown envelopes with motivational slips for your child.  They can be on your own stationary if you wish.  It's great for them to have a little comfort from family before each test.

Other ways you can you help at home..
  • Help your kids get to bed on time (many have admitted to reading under the covers or waking up in the middle of the night)
  • Encourage them to eat a healthful, hearty breakfast
  • Pack a healthful morning snack and water bottle
  • Ask your kids about how they're feeling about ISATS, ask them what we're working on, etc.
  • Encourage them to play outside a little each day
Reading:   We began reading a short but powerful read aloud titled Randall's Wall.  It's about a 5th grade boy whose poor, lonely home life causes him to put up a 'wall' to block in his emotions and to block out others' comments.  Ultimately his talent for sketching brings him hope.  It's a nice break from the some of the ISAT prep we've been doing and the kids are really into it!

I didn't formally assign any homework this weekend.  However, I did encourage them to spend 15-20 minutes on Study Island a few times this weekend.

4th grade math:  We spent our time reviewing some key concepts and terms for the ISATS, like area, perimeter and volume.  After the testing is complete, we'll return to Unit 6 to review and finish.

Miscellaneous:
  • Attention everyone!  It's time for the OPRF Food Pantry's annual Feinstein Challenge.  Mr. Feinstein will match what we donate to the Food Pantry.  Food will be collected at Whittier from Mar. 1-23.  Now is the time to bring in canned goods, noodles, peanut butter or other foods for our food drive!  Don't bring in anything that will spoil.  Your donations will be a big help to people in need.  So start collecting food today!!
