Week of 1/14/19 - 1/18/19

Enjoy the long weekend as we honor, celebrate, and continue to do the hard work that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. set out to do. 💗

Reading:  We synthesized notes on our weather sub-topics this week and each group made a plan for publishing their research.  We'll continue this work next week.  We also split into groups and read a variety of texts about Dr. MLK.  Each text had a different focus so as a class we gathered together to talk about the information each author presented and how we could combine these texts for a more complete picture.  This work mirrored our weather research and offered the opportunity for great discussion, too!  Ask your reader about the independent book they're reading at school and at home (if they're not reading one, please encourage them to do so!).  Ask them about the characters' traits and how these traits affect the decisions that they make.

Writing:  We are still working on our opinion essays.  We're developing evidence for each reason through mini-stories.  This is tough because the story needs to be told like a narrative, but also must prove the writer's thesis and reason.  For example, my thesis is "My brother is awesome." My first reason is ".... because he is hard-working."  So this week I worked on writing stories that illustrated how my brother is hard working.  We also did some creative writing in class and for homework.  Ask your child how the hug was invented!  Ask your child if they'd rather go to the deep sea or outer space.

Math:  Module 4 is called "Angle Measure and Plane figures."  This week we learned how to measure and draw angles.  We also talked about how a strong mathematician is precise and checks their work, but also still uses mathematical logic to make sure their answer is correct.  Ask your child to show you an obtuse, acute, right, and straight angle with their body.

Science: Our scientists are studying energy and magnetism with Ms. Darley. Ask them what they're learning!
