Week of 5/23/16 - 5/27/16

Today we had the Memorial Day assembly.  It was a meaningful experience for everyone.  Next Tuesday is Olympic Day.  Please remember to send a water bottle with your child's name on it, hat, sunscreen, and have your child wear comfortable clothes.  We can't wait for the fun!

--------
Reading:  We read the poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou and worked on identifying theme.  Then we compared it with our novel, Out of My Mind and discussed whether we felt that the main character, Melody, fit the themes of the poem.  It was a great exercise because students disagreed on the theme of the poem, which then caused nice variation in their responses to Out of My Mind! Ask your kids about the theme of "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" and whether Melody fits the theme.  Ask them why!

Writing:  We've started drafting our opinion pieces.  Each child chose the genre, voice, and audience through which they're sharing their opinions.  I can't wait to see how they turn out- some of their arguments are very well-crafted!  Ask your child to share his/ her topic and how the piece is developing.

Math: This week we had a lot of fun with our geometry unit.  Mrs. Harris (Carmelo's grandmother) came in to teach us about symmetry.  We also learned all about measurements of angles and solving for x.  We watched a few videos about geometrical lines and angles too, they loved those!  Today we took our test and will have one last math class on Wednesday to pass back the test.  Ask your child how their test went.

Social Studies:   The students have been working on their Illinois Explain Everything projects this week.  They are doing a great job!  We will finish our projects next week as a culmination of Social Studies.  Ask your child to see their Explain Everything!

Science:  Our scientists are studying ecosystems with Mr. Lukehart this trimester.  Ask them about their terrariums.
