Week of 10.29.12 - 11.2.12

What a great Halloween week!  Thanks to the families who signed up to bring treats for our celebration, as well as those who sent along a little something extra in an impromptu fashion.  We appreciate your generosity!  Next week is Camp Edwards... the weather looks great for our trip.

Reading:     We finished the last story of our "Growing Up" unit in Treasures and did some great vocab work this week.  They really need practice in using a dictionary, identifying parts of speech, etc.  The question I received the most was "Mrs. Roskos, conflicted isn't in the dictionary, can I use conflict?"  We'll continue to address prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and how they affect the meaning and usage in a sentence.

I also modeled how to write a response with text support to the question "How did _______ show that s/he changed or grew during the story?"   Then the students worked with their tables to answer that question with text support for one of the five stories we read during this unit.

4th Grade Math:   We wrapped up Unit 3 this week; their test will be on Wednesday 11.7.12 (they are off on Tuesday).  We will review in class Monday and they'll bring home their in-class review as well as the learning goals sheet for you to help them practice.

5th Grade Math: Check out Ms. Wennerberg's website and newsletter for updates: http://www.op97.org/swennerberg/

Science:   We started our Pollution Unit this week.  For the next two months (which will go by surprisingly quick!) we'll discuss land, air, water and noise pollution.  Our focus questions include What are the causes of pollution?, What are the consequences of the different types of pollution?, and What can we do to prevent further pollution?  It'll be a nice mix of lab work, reading and videos.

Miscellaneous:

  • CAMP EDWARDS: 5th grade families should hand in Camp Edwards permission slips and fees. They are due at the beginning of November. If you are in need of a scholarship, please let me or Debbie Dietz know.
