Week of 10.8.12 - 10.12.12

It was a short week but packed extra tight!  We had a great time at the fun run (the photo album is updated- at right), our STAND meeting included a fun activity that helped us get to know one another better, and our academics brought progress in several big projects.  The kids should enjoy a well-deserved weekend!

Also, in the last 20 minutes of our school day, we witnessed the craziest mealworm activity I've ever seen.  Ask your kids about what we observed (hint:  mealworm vs pupa!).

4th Grade Math:
This week we wrapped up, reviewed and tested on Unit 2.  Next up:  Multiplication and Division; Number Sentences and Algebra.  Get ready because it's a BIG unit!!

5th Grade Math: Check out Ms. Wennerberg's website and newsletter for updates: http://www.op97.org/swennerberg/

Social Studies: Check out Ms. Wennerberg's website and newsletter for updates: http://www.op97.org/swennerberg/

Science:   (Class 303)  The kids worked on the final drafts of their mealworm articles all week long.  I proofed each of their rough drafts and layouts, and we went over the rubric to understand expectations.  In addition to their class time, many took advantage of the option to work during lunch  recess or at home.  If they didn't finish in class, they'll be bringing it home to finish this weekend.  I look forward to seeing their final products on Monday (10.15)!  Monday we'll do a gallery walk and review for the unit test.  We won't have science Tuesday or Friday, so their unit test will be the following Monday, 10.22.

(Class 302)  I introduced the mealworm article project to the class this week and they drafted their articles.  We also did a layout mini lesson and I went through the rubric.  Next week I'll proof them and we'll move on to final copies.  Their final copies are due Tuesday, 10.23.  Their test unit test will be Friday, 10.26.

Reading:  We are still working with the theme "Growing Up."  Each of the stories we've read relate to this theme in some way:  through the characters gaining new experiences, making tough decisions, or learning about sophisticated world events.  Soon we'll begin to discuss the Growing Up project that relates to this unit.  More to come!

Writing:   We've moved to typing our drafts!  Some are using Google Docs and others are using flash drives; either way their work is mobile and their using new technology.  It's great!  I'm still conferencing with students as well.  Our mini-lessons this week focused on revising/ creating a strong lead (beginning).  Once the kids have their pieces done electronically, we'll be able to revise and edit more clearly.

Miscellaneous:

  • CAMP EDWARDS: 5th grade families should start to hand in Camp Edwards permission slips and fees. They are due at the beginning of November. If you are in need of a scholarship, please let me or Debbie Dietz know.
  • Watch for today's flyer with information about our One Book One School plan for this year.  It starts during conference week with your  trip to the Whittier book fair!   There you'll find out how you can help us with a plan to have every child reading the same book at the same time after winter break!
  • Please note the short turn around time for Art To Remember orders.  They are due at the latest by next Friday, October 19.  Check the Whittier website for a student created commercial about Art To Remember.
  • Please join us for the next SIT FAMILY NIGHT on Thursday, October 25th for "Reading Information Night."  Pizza will be served in the mini gym at 5:30.  At 6pm, parents are invited to the library for an introduction to the Treasures reading curriculum your children work with daily.  Whittier faculty will be on hand to highlight various reading comprehension strategies; they'll have question/ activities that you can use with your child at home.  Children will remain in the mini-gym with supervision, listening to stories and participating in related activities.  Preschool activities will also be provided.  The evening will end at 7pm.  Please RSVP by paper (orange- sent home today!) or here.   Please RSVP on-line here.
