Week of 3.7 - 3.11

What a great week!  We had some awesome, creative learning moments, and of course, laughed a LOT, too.  The kids earned their 40th paw and chose a reward.  We also finished ISATs and worked through many more Heritage Presentations.

If you haven't seen/ signed the permission slip for our upcoming fieldtrips, please ask your child about it this weekend!

Reading:  We finished Randall's Wall!  Our end-of-book assignment will be a pop-up scene .  The kids will choose an important scene from the story to depict as a pop-up window; they'll summarize the scene and explain its importance.  They began working on their scenes in class today.  The creativity and thought that they're putting into the projects is so awesome.  Sometimes their execution doesn't accurately reflect the amount of thought and effort they put forth.  We're working on strategies to use to make the quality of work the best it can be.  We hope to have these complete for next Friday's 'Gallery Walk' (see below) so that you may see both projects!

4th grade math:  We resumed Unit 6 (Division and map skills) this week.  First we reviewed long division and interpreting remainders.  They did well remembering those skills.  Today we started using a circular protractor to measure angles.

Science:  Science was so much fun this week!  We measured the capacity of our lifeboats, determined a standard method for loading the boats, and tested the number of passengers for the various capacities.  The kids did an excellent job independently following the lab directions to complete their experiments.  They worked well with their new teams, too!

Writing:  Watch out for your personalized invitation to our 'Gallery Walk' next Friday!  We'll be hosting a little party for the families to view the Heritage projects from 2:15-2:45.  During our writing class, we discussed the purpose of an invitation and how the guests and type of event determine the formality of the invitation.  Your invitations should be (in the words of the students) "breezy", "casual", "REALLY persuasive," and "informative."  Also... "humorous could work."  We look forward to seeing many of you on Friday.  The kids are REALLY hoping for a ribbon cutting ceremony and body guards, but I have to draw the line somewhere...

Miscellaneous:
  • Attention everyone!  It's time for the OPRF Food Pantry's annual Feinstein Challenge.  Mr. Feinstein will match what we donate to the Food Pantry.  Food will be collected at Whittier from Mar. 1-23.  Now is the time to bring in canned goods, noodles, peanut butter or other foods for our food drive!  Don't bring in anything that will spoil.  Your donations will be a big help to people in need
