Pardon the delay in posting; I was out Friday for professional development. The kids were amazing, yet again, for our sub! They only need six more class paws for their first reward (they voted on root-beer floats). Picture day is next Monday so please send in order forms and money this week. Also look out for the 'code of conduct' form; please read it with your kids and send it back asap. We receive an incentive if the whole class returns it by October 8th!!
Reading: We're nearing the end of "A View from Saturday." When we finish the novel, the kids will be assigned a creative response project as their assessment. They'll have time to work in class and will need to work at home, too. Look out for more info in this Friday's blog.
Writing: The kids handed in their rough drafts on Friday. They'll receive my comments on Tuesday and we'll begin revising. As the week progresses, ask your kids about how they organized their pieces (we use a narrative 'graph' to understand beginning middle and end). The 'middle' should take up most of their story, as it has the action from problem to climax.
Science: We finished the mealworm experiments on Thursday. They were REALLY impressive in terms of organization, creativity, and how they followed the scientific method. Additionally, watching 9, 10, 11 year olds sooo serious with their mealworms was hilarious. We talked about how they can draw conclusions from their own experiments, but those conclusions might not be broad enough to draw for ALL mealworms (i.e. "My mealworm didn't eat the apple in any of the 3 tests. I think he is either not hungry, or doesn't like apples." Can we draw a conclusion that all mealworms don't like apples? no....) This week they are writing articles about their mealworm experiments for Ranger Rick Magazine as their final assessment to the unit.
Math: We tested on Unit 1 Friday. We'll review the test and correct mistakes Tuesday. Please look out for the tests to come home for a signature. This week we'll start Unit 2: Using Numbers and Organizing Data. More to come!!
Miscellaneous:
- If your kids bring snacks in tupperware, it would help if it were labeled with their initials. If I know whose it is, I can return it if it gets left behind in class!
- Please send in picture day forms, Camp Edwards permission slips and fees, and signed code of conduct forms
- If you didn't sign up for conferences at open house, please email me to schedule a time: mklemchuk@op97.org
Monday we went to music, as usual. Tuesday we went to art and put chalk on paper. Then wiped it off with a tissue until the paper changed color. So cool!
Wednesday was my dad's birthday and library day! In gym on Thursday we played a version of soccer. Friday, our substitute was Ms. Vitale and she was great! We were great too.
